Transmission Inspection, Fluid Exchange or Replacement

A car’s transmission rarely undergoes a total failure and hardly ever needs replacement, but it does need service and inspection against damage regularly. As a caveat to such a bold statement, cars from the 70s through the 90s didn’t last long enough to need a new transmission. But modern cars are designed to reach about 300,000 miles if properly cared for. Even though your transmission is designed to handle such high mileage performance, it may well need to be replaced before the end of such a lifespan. Regardless of what such a statement implies, a modern car does need the regular maintenance of a transmission fluid exchange.

Why Transmission Services Need To Be Conducted

The main reason for a transmission fluid exchange is that there isn’t any way to inspect the fluid other than by draining it, and inspecting the fluid is the best way to catch a minor problem before it becomes an expensive repair. In theory, the transmission is a closed system and the fluid never needs to be drained and refilled. In reality, problems do arise because of the forces generated by the vehicle when driven as intended. If a gasket blows out, it can compromise the integrity of the transmission fluid with debris from the gasket, condensation from outside air, or both. That leads to worse transmission damage. Unfortunately, there is no way to know such a thing has happened other than to inspect the fluid, and once it has been drained it makes no sense to refill it with the old fluid instead of new.

What Happens if Necessary Transmission Services Are Ignored

Again, transmissions in modern vehicles rarely cause a problem if the car is driven responsibly and hasn’t been involved in a traffic accident, so usually, a transmission inspection and service being skipped aren’t going to end the life of the car. Problems come when service is skipped and a problem is there, it’s only going to get worse over time. As it gets worse, it’s going to become exponentially more expensive to repair until the point of simply needing a new transmission, which is not a “cheap and easy” repair to conduct.

Brooklyn Mitsubishi Service Department

Since the article mentioned cars from the 70s, it’s worth noting how a local mechanic in those days could conduct transmission services as well or better than a dealer, but that is no longer true. A reputable dealer and service center such as Brooklyn Mitsubishi in New York City hires professional technicians who understand the engineering specifications of each make and model of vehicle, and are properly trained to conduct repairs efficiently.
